Nigel Barnett, Mechanical and Structural Design Lead
Nigel is a senior and this is his second year on the team. His favorite task is test driving the car. He joined the team because it was a great opportunity for him to apply his Autodesk Inventor CAD design skills and work with peers to make something incredible. The accomplishment he is most proud of is making a radical design change from last year’s championship car. On the weekends, he likes playing online videogames with friends. A fun fact about him is that Nigel has visited over 13 countries and even if he could live anywhere else, he would still live in the Pacific Northwest.
Ali Karim, Strategy Lead
Ali is a sophomore, and this is his second year on the team. While on the team you can see him doing a variety of things ranging from mechanical, telemetry, and aerodynamics. Ali for example creates the race plan, analyzes, and gathers various data needed to better understand the car and win the race. Some of his favorite tasks that he likes doing for the team are learning about CFD and working on the telemetry system. He joined the team last year because he thought it would be a cool experience. Another reason is it’s a project he has never seen before and wanted to be a part of it. A fun fact about Ali is that he is learning how to code. Some of his hobbies outside of solar car include speech and debate, spending time with his family, and swimming.
Maya Peña, Fundraising and Outreach Lead
Maya is a junior on the team and this is her second year. She does a ton of fundraising for the team in order to raise money for the car and travel costs. She also contributes to our social media (Instagram) and website (blog posts, photos, and fundraising updates). Some things she enjoys doing for the team are raising money for the team, learning about the process of building the car, and the electrical aspect. She joined the team last year after going to Texas when her brother was the captain of the Solar Car team. Which made her become interested in the team and decided to join the team, despite not going to RAHS. Her most significant accomplishment was raising over $76k last year for the team. On the weekends she enjoys going outside, photography, skating, lacrosse (skiing and snowboarding in the winter). A fun fact is she would move back to Denmark in a heartbeat if she could live anywhere because she loved living there.
Hailin Truman, Systems Lead
Hailin is a sophomore on the team and this is his second year on the team. He manages anything that goes into the physical car and has experience with all aspects of the car as well as general knowledge about all components of the car. He makes sure everything in the car works and looks at the bigger picture regarding how different parts of the car work with other components. He is kind of in charge of the general car but also making sure that the leads on specific parts of the car are working together, and what one is doing won’t affect the progress of another. A favorite task that he likes doing for the team is working on the frame of the car and all the individual systems. He joined the team because he really wanted to learn more about design and manufacturing. For Hailin, it was all a perfect fit because he joined a team that relied heavily on teamwork and production. Accomplishments he is most proud of are the creation of most of the frame of the car and making all of the moving systems in it as well. On the weekends you with either find him working on his airplane or working on the solar car. A fun fact about him is if he could live anywhere he would choose to live in Sweden.
Alexis (Lexi) Lee, Team Communications Lead
Lexi is a sophomore on the team and this is her second year on the team. As a team communications lead, she serves on the executive team, managing team communications, meetings, presentations, and events. She enjoys just learning about anything and everything she can. One of the coolest parts about her being on the team is that she has exposure to many different types of engineering and science. Ultimately, this club is helping her determine what she wants to study in college and beyond. She joined the team because she wanted to challenge herself to learn more about functional engineering. An accomplishment she is most proud of is being awarded the Brittney Boatright Love of Learning award awarded by the Principal, Ms. Tipton of Raisbeck Aviation High School. On the weekends she spends lots of her time playing elite level soccer on the field or in the gym. As of right now, she is working towards getting her Private Pilot license so she spends her weekends studying and flying. Which all takes up a lot of her time. A fun fact about her is if she could live anywhere she would live in Japan, a place she has always wanted to live in to experienced the culture.
Joseph Nwizugbo, Communications Lead
Joseph is a senior on the team. This is his third year on the team. He got involved in solar car because he wanted to learn more about electronics and get more hands-on engineering experience. A fun fact about Joseph is that he is 6’5″ and just barely fits in the solar car. Outside of solar car, he enjoys listening to music and going on picnics with friends.
Whittaker Grant, Strategy-Data Co-Lead
Whittaker is a sophomore on the team, and this is his second year on the team. A favorite task that he likes doing for the team is learning about different coding languages. He joined the team last year because he thought it would be a great way to develop skills he thinks will come in handy in the future. Some accomplishments he is most proud of are learning how to write some python code. On the weekends he likes spending time with friends. A fun fact about him is he would live in California or Japan if he could live anywhere.
Erin McKelvey, Strategy-Data Acquisition
Erin is a senior on the team and this is her second year. What she does for the team is she takes input from sensors on the car (voltage, power, battery percentage, etc.) and transmits the data to the strategists to make sure the car is working as efficiently as possible. She works with others using Arduino, programming in python, C++, MySQL databases, and Grafana dashboards. Out of all this, she enjoys teaching what she has learned to others and coding. She got involved with all this because she likes spending lots of time in the shop working on other projects and got interested in what she saw the green energy team was working on. The accomplishment she is most proud of is getting our database system working on the cloud. On the weekends you would see her doing very little tasks and relaxing. A fun fact is if she could live anywhere, she would travel the world and not spend too much time in one place.
Aldrei Joshua Mislang
Aldrei is a senior on the team. He joined the team this year in order to become a better photographer and out of his love for motorsports. A fun fact about Aldrei is that he loves helicopters. Outside of Solar Car, he enjoys photography.
Max Welliver, Structural and Aerodynamics
Max is a senior on the team and it’s his second year on the team. He performs aerodynamic analysis on different iterations of the car and works to improve the design for better results. Something he enjoys doing for the team is analyzing the computation fluid dynamic results and overcoming the different challenges faced in the virtual wind tunnel. According to him, it’s a lot of fun to engineer solutions to problems we encounter. An accomplishment that he is most proud of is leading the Green Energy Team presentation for the Royal Aeronautical Society at the Museum of Flight. On his weekends he likes to go flying, build scale models, and work on aviation-related projects. A fun fact is he would love to live in Switzerland.
Zachary is a freshman and this is his first year on the team. Something he enjoys doing in the team is learning about the rules as well as working with them. He joined because he was interested in racing, and the accomplishment he is most proud of is getting into RAHS. He likes to spend his weekends with his family and if he could live anywhere it would be here in Washington.
Jackson is a sophomore, and this is his second year on the team. He got involved in solar car because he wanted to have a hands-on experience that would also teach him about STEM and useful skills in STEM fields. Outside of solar car, Jackson enjoys snowboarding, which he has been doing since he was 4 years old.
Eric is a freshman on the team, and this is his first year on the team. Something he enjoys doing while on the team is learning the basics about Arduino. He joined the team because he wanted to learn more about engineering and computer programming. He also wanted to help build a solar car because it’s an intriguing idea to him. Some accomplishments he is most proud of are being apart of Rainer Scholars and Raisbeck Aviation High School. On the weekends, you will find him exercising, learning some more about java, playing video games, and hanging out with friends and family. If he could live anywhere, it would be in the United States of America.
Daniel Sung, Mechanical
Daniel is a freshman on the team and this is his first year on the team. Right now he is helping design a new steering wheel and work on the solar panels. Something he enjoys doing while being on the team is working on circuits and designing things. He joined the team because he was interested in solar panels and wanted to expand his knowledge on them. He also joined because RAHS Green Energy Team’s recruiting new members’ presentations which were very thoughtful and very good in his opinion. On the weekends he likes spending time with his friends, hanging out, building model kits, and expanding his knowledge. If he could live anywhere it would be somewhere in Europe.
Emily is a sophomore on the team, and this is her first year. She is especially interested in solar panels and solar energy and how we will best utilize that for our car. She joined because she was originally inspired after doing a project in her freshman science class where they argued about the effects of climate change. Where she was tasked with researching solar energy and from then on she was inspired to join the team to further her knowledge on the team. She is also really interested in ensuring that others know about climate change and the problems that it could cause. As she knows many people don’t understand the idea or believe that it is a problem. She is most proud of getting to learn more about the team and the different systems that are involved with building a solar car. She is also very proud to get to work with such a hardworking team and learn from others’ ideas and experiences. On the weekends, she really enjoys learning more about aviation as she is planning to start working to gain a private pilot’s license. She also really enjoys playing and composing music and playing soccer. If she could live anywhere she would probably like to move around as she really enjoys getting to learn about different cultures, history, and see different types of geography.
Victor Perete McIntyre, Strategy-Data
VIctor is a freshman on the team, and this is his first year on the team. He develops and maintains both the software and hardware ends of the SOlar Car to optimize energy efficiency. He also makes sure the car functions properly and the necessary data is recorded. Favorite things he likes doing for the team are working on telemetry and electrical writing. My advisor (Mr. McComb) is one of the coaches and knew I had the ability to code and recommended it to me because a position was open. I’ve been working with code recently, and have been more interested in learning code. Some of the accomplishments he is most proud of are creating relationships with companies like Microsoft and Unity and showing his capability (He was offered an internship with a Microsoft program but is too young as of now). On the weekends he likes to use his free time to enjoy and get work done. A fun fact is if he could live anywhere it would be locations with the availability of too many resources. For example, he would love to live in cities like Seattle because of their technological centers.
Chip is a sophomore on the team and this is his first year. A favorite task that he likes doing for the team is putting the cells together and learning about how they work. He joined the team because he had several friends on the team that spoke very highly of it. He was also interested in the skills that it could teach him. Chip doesn’t have any accomplishments yet but he is hoping to work on the car and will be very proud when it races next summer. On the weekends you will find him enjoying his time hanging out with friends, swimming, reading, and hiking. If he could live anywhere it would be in the Pacific North West This is because it has all of the beautiful mountains, trees, and lakes. Another place he would live in is Switzerland because it is a cool place to live in his opinion.
Timothy Jou, Data Acquisition
Timothy is a freshman on the team and this is his first year on the team. He works on the hardware and software that controls collecting real-time data on the solar car and sending it wirelessly to the database on the cloud. This data is used to strategize and optimize driving performance. He really enjoys solving problems that involve teamwork and critical thinking. On the other hand, he joined the team because he was interested in solar energy and how it could be used to power a car. Another reason he joined was that he found out that this club teaches how to strengthen communication and teamwork skills, which have many practical uses in the real world. An accomplishment Timothy is most proud of is getting a “Student of the Quarter in Science” award in middle school. For him, it felt good being recognized for having outstanding performance in science. We will find him sleeping in, eating food, and relaxing on the weekends. A fun fact is if he could live anywhere it would be in Seattle because he enjoys the weather and culture around the Seattle area.
Lucien Freemesser, Electrical and Arduino
Lucien is a sophomore on the team, and this is his second year. He works on designing and building all of the electrical systems in our car, and works on coding the Arudino’s which gather all of our data. Out of all he does for the team, he doesn’t have a favorite task he likes doing because he likes to do everything for the team. He joined the team because he likes solar power and wanted to know more about it. His friends on the team also convinced him it was the best club to join, and as of now he thinks it is the best club to be in. As for the accomplishments he is most proud of, he doesn’t have any particular ones. On the weekends he likes spending it outdoors sailing or hiking. A fun fact is if he could live anywhere it would be in Italy.
Ethan Palisoc, Outreach
Ethan is a senior on the team and this is his second year on the team. What he does for the team is he helps fundraise and presents the team to companies. Out of all he does, his favorite task is setting up presentations. He joined the team because he was interested in raising money for a team that requires a lot of money in order to function. Alain’s mentorship was what made him join the team. Accomplishments he is most proud of is getting 1st place on the video presentation. On the weekends, you will find him playing league of legends, spending time with his family, and talking to friends. A fun fact is if he could live anywhere it would be in Japan.
Teddie Blahous, Structural and Mechanical
Teddie is a junior at Raisbeck and this is his third year on the team. One of his favorite tasks he enjoys doing for the team is welding and CAD (Computer-Aided Design). He joined the team because it was the only club in the school that was building a solar car, and he has always been into solar and green energy, as well as building cars. Accomplishments he is most proud of are welding most of the solar car, and being one of the few members on the team for the longest amount of years (three years so far). On the weekends we will find him either hiking, biking, or skiing. A fun fact is if he could live anywhere it would be Alaska.
Thien-Kim Nguyen, Fundraising
Kim is a sophomore and this is her first year on the team. Her favorite task so far for the team is reaching out to corporates trying to fundraise money for them as well as making presentations. She joined the team because she thought it was a great opportunity to learn useful skills, as well as help out the team, and network with professionals in the STEM industry. An accomplishment she is proud of is being the website manager of this website. On the weekends you will find her sleeping in, eating a lot, doing her homework, watching Korean Drama, movies, exercising, reading, at the beach or park, or at the gym. A fun fact is if she could live anywhere it would be Paris, France, or Singapore.
Abigail Jawili (Abby), Telemetry
Abby is a freshman on the team and this is her first year on the team. She is currently creating a website to see all the data that is coming from the car. A favorite task that she likes doing for the team is working with Arduino to create projects. She joined the team this year because she was interested in the goal of making a car, solely based on solar energy. She also joined to expand her knowledge out of the core concepts of schools and gain more knowledge of what she would like to do in the future. An accomplishment that she is most proud of is getting into Raisbeck Aviation High School. On the weekends you will find her on the soccer field practicing soccer with her dad. A fun fact is if she could live anywhere it would be in Chicago, Illinois.
